In the spirit of sharing my creative song-writing process, I thought I'd share what I've been working on this evening. I have a gig coming on Sunday with a bunch of song-writers and I'm determined to have something new to play. It makes a gig much more exciting for me.
As I’ve been working on a new song in the nest tonight, aka my studio, I decided to record an audio demo of it to assist me with arrangement, which in turn helps me with finishing the lyric writing. The words tend to take me the longest to complete.
Because I believe lyrics are essentially a form of intention-setting and spell-casting, I am very careful to write words with messages that I’m happy to repeat. Over and over again!
Be warned- it IS a demo, a sketch comprised of off-the-cuff takes. I didn’t want to spend too much time refining parts.
This stage of my process is akin to the countless pencil drawings visual artists do as preparation for mapping out the composition for the final piece.
I hear enough magic and beauty taking root in it for me to want to share it. And I’ve found some great melodic ideas I wouldn’t otherwise have discovered without making this recording.
I'll be back to share the finished version when the song is done!
